Filming your first video can be nerve-racking and that lack of confidence can come across on camera. If you’re nervous about filming, here are six simple tips that will help you boost your confidence on camera.

Have a Plan

Whether it’s your first video or you consider yourself an old pro, it’s always worth having a plan in place for your videos.

A plan doesn’t necessarily mean you need to write a script, but you should have an outline of what you want to film, key points you want to cover and what your call to action will be. Having a plan, even if it’s a rough one, will help to give your video structure, minimising the risk of you going blank on camera.

I also find that a plan speeds up the filming process as you’ll have a clear vision of what you’re trying to achieve.

Get Comfortable

If you’re not comfortable in front of the camera, your audience will see it straight away.

No one feels one hundred percent confident when getting started making videos, so film in a familiar location. Location can make a world of difference, so make sure it’s somewhere you feel relaxed and comfortable.

When it comes to choosing what to wear, always go for comfort over style. Although you want to make the right first impression on camera, if you’re wearing your best three-piece suit but feel hot and bothered, it will come across on camera.

Practise Makes Perfect

It’s true that the more times you practise something, the better you’ll get. If it’s your first time in front of the camera and you’re feeling a little uncomfortable or you're unsure of what you should be saying or doing, have a practice run.

Film yourself talking on camera and watch your footage back. You’ll quickly be able to see what’s working and what you need to change. For example, you might need to speak up a little or add more expression into your speech.

Minimise Distractions

When filming a video, it’s important that you’re present and look engaged in what you’re saying and doing. The more engaged you are, the more confident you’ll look on camera.

Make sure you minimise the number of distractions around you, so put your phone on silent and switch off your notifications.

One of the biggest distractions can be other people. Not only can they interrupt filming, but they can also make you feel a little uncomfortable or on edge, especially if it’s your first video.

Try and film when no one is around, ask your colleagues not to disturb you, or film when your kids are at school.

Slow Down While Talking

Some people are naturally fast talkers. For most of us, we start speaking quicker when we’re nervous or unsure of ourselves.

One of the easiest ways to come across more confident on camera is to slow down while speaking. This might feel unnatural at first, but it will make all the difference. Slowing down will make it easier for your audience to understand what you’re saying, help your points to come across more clearly and of course, make you sound confident in what you’re saying.

Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

It’s ok to mess up!

Everyone makes little mistakes when filming, we’re all human after all.

Including little ‘human’ moments will make you seem more relatable and authentic which audiences love to see. It will also help to give viewers an insight into your personality, something that every business should be showcasing.

The most important thing is to have fun and be yourself. Being authentic and a little more natural will help you come across more confident than if you were reading from a script.
